Kimberly Imel
Kimberly Imel is a researcher at AIR, with over five years of experience providing subject matter expertise and maintaining quality assurance for the National Assessment of Educational Progress U.S. history and civics assessments. She also has over 2 years of experience supporting social studies-focused work on individual state contracts. Imel works with states to facilitate the revision and implementation of social studies standards. To support state standards work, Imel cowrote a state-specific landscape report for New Mexico during their standards revision process. She also cowrote a landscape report that analyzes the state of social studies curricula and curriculum review tools. For this report, Imel helped create two rubrics to evaluate states’ social studies–specific curriculum review tools for identifying high-quality instructional materials.
Currently, Imel is serving as the project director for Alaska's social studies standards revision process. She is also leading the development of a comprehensive, rigorous, and flexible tool for identifying high-quality instructional materials in social studies that, in an adapted form, will be used to evaluate curriculum in Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Prior to her work at AIR, Imel has about one year experience teaching students in grades ranging from 5 through 8 in social studies and English language arts.
