Directory of Civil Society Organizations Supporting Education in Haiti Launched by AIR

Washington, D.C. – The American Institutes for Research (AIR) has created and launched a free online directory of civil society organizations engaged in the improvement of primary and secondary education in Haiti, as well as school-based health services in the Caribbean nation.

Haitian childrenThe directory, Supporting Education in Haiti: A Directory of Civil Society Organizations Working in the Education Sector in Haiti, was developed and funded by AIR. It contains descriptions and contact information for over 90 organizations working nationwide and/or in the urban areas of Port-au-Prince, Gonaïves, Cap-Haïtien, Saint-Marc, Les Cayes, and Petit-Goâve. AIR will update and expand the directory on an on-going basis, and welcomes suggestions for additional organizations to be included.

Creation of the directory was in response to a call by former President Bill Clinton, who serves as United Nations Special Envoy to Haiti, for better communication and coordination of activities among non-governmental groups trying to help a country challenged by some of the worst poverty in the Western Hemisphere.

The purpose of the directory is to identify and provide information on organizations that are currently active in support for primary and secondary education and school-based health. The directory will:

  • help promote and encourage private sector support to the education sector;
  • link donors, the Haitian Diaspora, and the private sector to local Haitian organizations working to improve education; and
  • help to improve the coordination of education support activities in Haiti.
